After visiting Fira, on our first day on Santorini, our second day was dedicated to Oia. We hiked there from our hotel and arrived in Oia at mid-day, sweaty and hungry.
Our first stop was at Melitini for lunch. It is just off the main road and a brilliant place for greek tapas size dishes. We opted for various Greek dips with pita bread, followed by baked feta and some vegetables, everything was very tasty and filling, and the prices were reasonable for Santorini.
After finishing our very satisfying lunch, we headed to Oia city centre and merged into the crowd of tourist. I guess that is something you have to get used to when visiting Santorini, tourists are EVERYWHERE and at times the popular places can get overwhelmingly busy. A small price to pay to visit one of the most beautiful places on Earth…
One of the main sights in Oia is Ekklisia Panagia Platsani, a beautiful church in the centre. A building literally cannot get more Greek than this!
We then headed to the narrow and very busy streets on the edge of the cliff. This is where the paths can get a bit clogged with people.
The views are absolutely stunning and it is recommended to come to Oia at sunset, for even more beautiful views. We didn’t do it though as the view from Grace Hotel is the same and much quieter.
We explored the touristy shops, ran into some beautiful buildings and met again some lovely furry locals. We were very fortunate to visit Greece at peak bougainvillaea season which made all my pictures even more charming. It could be described as the ‘Sakura’ of Greece if you will!
An afternoon spent in a real-life postcard setting…

The sunset is great, though you need to be there early if you want a decent photo viewpoint. It’s also worth doing a cruise which puts you on the water at Oia at sunset. We did both and loved both.
