When visiting Petra, we picked a hike off the beaten track and which I very much recommend (map here). It took us uphill to the High Place which offers fantastic view of the ancient city (the archaeological site is huge!), then to the hidden Garden Complex and finally sent us back toward the Colonnaded street. It is physically challenging but really worth it as you end up in very quiet ‘neighbourhoods’.
